Ethics in Counseling
Subject area – Ethics

Research the ethical and legal issues in an unfolding ethical dilemma case and
recommend a course of action. Students will be assigned a clinical case study.
Students MUST cite current research literature on the issues imbedded in the case.
Citing research literature means going beyond the text book. Students can use current
(meaning last 5 to 10 years) peer reviewed journals as a reference. Students will use 5
sources. Avoid citing websites unless they contain scholarly material. Students will
use an ethical decision-making framework to organize their paper. At the end of the
paper, based on the application of the ethical decision making model chosen,
recommend a course of action for the counselor in the case, consider the role of the
counselor as an advocate in the larger behavioral health system. APA style required.
Guidelines for the Ethics Paper:

Students will incorporate material learned throughout the course to an ethical case
study. Students should determine a course of action to be taken in response to the
ethical dilemma and incorporate the following:

1. Ethical principles underlying the dilemma

2. Value systems of the client and counselor (the student/yourself)

3. A decision-making model (students should justify their reasoning for choosing this
model)

4. Citation of appropriate professional standards and guidelines

5. Consideration of the cultural context of the client and counselor

6. Other action steps or considerations you may use.

7. Citation of at least five references (journal articles) and bibliography.
