The mid-term examination for this course will be a paper, which will be submitted electronically.
You are to write a two to four (2 to 4) page paper (approx. 500 – 1,000 words) analyzing any of the published video speeches available on
TED.com. You may not select a video presentation of poetry or music.
Based on the knowledge acquired thus far in class, using concepts described in the book, and drawing on your personal experience watching
live speeches, analyze any of the ted.com talks for the following:
Delivery style. Was the speaker prepared? Did they show evidence of practice?
Communication with the audience. How effectively did the speaker relate the material to the audience?
Organization. Describe the speaker’s organizational pattern and indicate some of the strategies the speaker used to organize the speech.
Was the thesis in evidence? Was the speech easy to follow? If so, what did the speaker do to make it so?
Use of visual aids to enhance the message. Describe the use of visual aids (sometimes inferred by video) and how that impacted the speech
positively or negatively.
Overall impact. Describe your impressions of the overall effect of the speech and lessons for your own speaking you might be able to draw
upon.
Be sure to cite the URL of the speech, along with the speech title and speaker’s name. Also please include a brief synopsis of the content
of the speech.
Notes:
It is strongly recommended to browse the speeches available for one that is of interest to you. Use the search function to find topics
pertinent to your interests.
If you need to cite specific instances taking place in the speech, be sure to denote the time of the video in your paper for clarity.
This counts as a major exam grade, so give the assignment the merit it deserves.
