Ernest Hemingway

1. The first Portfolio assignment is a “prelude” assignment to the Research Essay assignment. As such, it’s also designed to be a practice exercise with paraphrasing skills and documentation format. Access our College’s online literary databases and conduct a biographical search on an author from our Literary Canon. Select two biographical pieces and paraphrase the content to form the bulk of the body of your essay. Be careful to avoid plagiarism by synthesizing the facts of the biography and using your own words. You must cite all paraphrased information with MLA parenthetical citation in the text of your essay, as well as prepare an MLA “Works Cited” page, correctly following format for an online database source listed in the MLA section of your handbook. If you borrow from the original wording of your source without using quotation marks, this is a form of plagiarism and you will earn a failing grade. You should, of course, focus your content with an introductory paragraph and thesis which reflects at least 3 central biographical elements of your chosen author’s life. Choose at least three notable and representative biographical aspects and posit these in your thesis. Your corresponding body paragraphs should begin with a topic sentence directly linking to those thesis points and concretely develop the biographical points in the order posited in the thesis. I can’t grade this portfolio assignment without a printout of the original biography from the database, as there are so many different possibilities to choose from, and I am typically not in front of my computer when assessing student work. Should you neglect to do this, you will take a “0” on the entry. Please do not consult additional sources for this assignment.1.“Ernest Miller Hemingway.” Dictionary of American Biography.
