Though the e-commerce landscape has changed dramatically since the introduction of the e-commerce directive (2000/31/EC) over a decade and a half ago, the European Commission has remained reluctant to carry out any whole-scale update of this directive.

Discuss the above statement in light of the suitability of the provisions on the liability of intermediary service providers in the E-Commerce Directive to today’s e-commerce environments such as social media platforms.
