Descartes and Doubting – SLO #3
Assignment 3 is entitled Descartes and Doubting. Here is the question you are to
answer: Do you agree with Descartes, “If you would be a real seeker after truth, it
is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all
things”?
Making an argument is key to doing well with this assignment. This is an argument
and not a research paper.
Your writing should be at least three-to-four pages in length, double spaced,
typed, 12-point font, normal margins. Use the Eagle Online submission process.
The format is the same as previous assignments: introduction, question/answer
(the nine questions of critical thinking), conclusion.
Your resource for this paper is the Descartes’ text.
Using the nine questions of critical thinking in your writing, you must write the
question and then answer it in complete sentences. Be exhaustive in your
answers to each question.
Evidence your claims by referencing the Descartes’ text with the numbers in the
margins of the text (example: Descartes, 16).
SLO #3: Read it. Understand it. Integrate SLO #3 (a, b, c) into your writing by
telling how core philosophical questions and concepts apply to your own personal
experiences (provide one), contemporary issues (provide one), and elucidating
how ways of thinking and cultural influences impact their relevance to the
contemporary issue (explain how). Be deliberate and not casual in your
integration of these core questions and concepts into your material.
Core philosophical questions and concepts are in the seven core areas of
philosophy: aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, logic, metaphysics, social and
political philosophy, axiology (values). You have already read this material: in
“Introduction to Philosophy and Critical Thinking,” next “Lecture Notes/Handouts,”
next Traditional Branches of Philosophy.” Explanations and models are provided.
Your paper will be graded on the basis of how well you comply with integrating
Learning Outcome #3 into the nine questions of critical thinking of the assignment
itself, Descartes and Doubting.
To help your thinking, realize that Descartes’ approach to truth is totally rational,
not empirical. Faith has no part in his rationalistic system. Thus, you must be
clear in your thinking about the epistemological differences of rationalism,
empiricism and (religious) faith. You may use the Internet to understand the
differences between rationalism, empiricism and (religious) faith.

The long-term value for your life in using the nine questions of critical thinking is
that you can use this process, when making decisions, for the rest of your life.
