Current Event (All Lesson 1 Lectures):
Each student is required to choose a current urban planning or redevelopment issue in his/her community. Using at minimum of two (2) news articles from local news sources covering the event that are no more than one year old, the student will write a minimum of a two (2) double-spaced page paper covering the following points:
1. A brief introduction on the topic chosen using information from the textbook and articles;
2. Discussion of the impact of the issue on the region’s development and implementation of urban and regional planning or economic development;
3. Analysis of the political environment in which this public policy issue is being addressed; and
4. A critical review of how decision-makers are addressing the matter and engaging key stakeholders and the general public in the decision-making process.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE REVIEW (All Lesson 1-3 Lectures):
Each student is required to review two (2) *scholarly, peer reviewed articles on an urban planning issue. In a minimum of three (3) double-spaced pages, the student will:
1. Present an introduction on the topic chosen using information from the textbook and articles;
2. Compare and/or contrast the themes of the articles in relation to the chosen topic; and
3. Conclude with a critical review of the authors’ positions.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not a mini research paper. This assignment requires students to compare and contrast the views of two subject matter experts on a topic. If the paper is not presented in this format significant points will be lost.
