Structure:

Introduction: Cleary outline which concept you are analysing and why this is a relevant concept in nursing. Identify the concept analysis model you will be using ( Walker & Avant or Rodgers) and ensure you adhere to the model in the main body of the text. Outline what will be discussed in the essay. This section should be around 200-250 words only.

Main Text:
The content in this section depends on which concept analysis model you choose. A concept analysis should always include a short section on the literature search you carried out , including information on the key words used in the search, the data bases used and the results these yielded .

For example, if you choose Rodgers’ model, you could take the following into account for the structure of the essay:
– Identify and name the concept of interest. E.g. Compassion
– Provide a definition of the concept: use both dictionary definitions and definitions from nursing literature.
– Identify and discuss surrogate terms and relevant uses of the concept ( the main focus must be on the use of the concept in nursing)
– Identify and discuss the literature you used and explain your search strategy.
– Identify and discuss the attributes of the concept.
– Identify and discus antecedents and consequences of the concept. E.g. if you discuss antecedent of the concept of compassion, you should discuss what needs to occur before compassion is developed.
– Identify and discuss concepts that are related to your concept and discuss how these impact on your chosen concept.
– Identify and discuss a model case of the concept – try not to use too much of your word count on this section as you may run the risk of writing an anecdotal case study otherwise
Your essay should also make close links between your concept and nursing theory and nursing guidelines/policies.
