In this assignment, you will write a 5-7 page paper, which should include answering the discussion questions (listed below). Conceptualize and answer these questions under the light of communication in film and what you have learned in the course so far. That means that the answers should tie in with the significance of communication in film topics throughout the semester. This paper should be written in an APA-Style format. Identify the tone of the opening scene. How do the music, lighting, and editing of the scene help establish that tone? 2. In the scene where young Charles Kane is playing in the snow, explain how the position of the characters (to each other), the use of deep-focus, the framing of the characters, and the opening and closing of the window develop the tension in the scene and establish the relationships the characters have to each other. 3. How does the use of lighting, camera angles, character position, and editing develop the characters when Kane writes his “Declaration of Principles”? 4. How does the use of editing, costumes, hairstyles, dialogue, character position, music and scene transitions show the deterioration of Kane’s first marriage? 5. Explain how the use of camera angles, set design, and editing show the tension between Kane and Leland after Kane has lost the election. 6. Explain how the use of lighting, editing, sound, and dialogue show how Kane, Susan, and Leland feel about her debut as an opera singer. 7. After Kane has destroyed Susan’s room, he walks out holding a snow globe. In the hallway he briefly passes by a number of mirrors. How does this one shot symbolize the entire film? Support your answer by referencing at least three other scenes/moments from the film. 8. The plot of Citizen Kane is held together by the search for “Rosebud”. To what extent is “Rosebud” just a “red herring” – a pretext for the story? Does “Rosebud” really symbolize anything, and if so, what? In the end, do we really know what “Rosebud” was? Support your answer with three specific scenes/moments from the film.
