Australian Identity

Context: As a young short story writer, you have been asked to present a formal speech to other young writers at a literary forum about the way Australian identity is represented in contemporary literature. Task Description: You are to create and present a formal expository speech which analyses and evaluates the way Australian identity is represented in Boys of Blood and Bone, and one other contemporary text. Your speech should analyse and evaluate: • the aesthetic features used in the texts; • the ideas, attitudes and values that underpin the texts; • the way these shape the representation of the Australian identity in the texts; and • whether or not the representations challenge the traditional Australian stereotype. Genre: Formal expository speech for a forum (public text). Social purpose: To discuss contemporary literature and national identity and effectively argue a point of view. Tenor/roles/ relationships: You are a speaker to an audience of writers, students and people interested in literature. Field/ subject matter: You must:  refer to the novel Boys of Blood & Bone  refer to at least one other short story, poem or novel extract that you have examined so far in this unit to support your argument  take the second text from Unit 2  use appropriate language for an expository speech.
