1. To carry our discussion on values into a broader context, you will conduct informal interviews with at least three people outside this class.

a. Before you talk with anyone, use material from class discussions, readings, or other relevant material to develop a list of values that you believe portrays what the AVERAGE American considers important. Note that this list may or may not mirror what you personally believe is important in your own life – especially if you don’t consider yourself average!

b. Interview 3 people, preferably ones who are quite different from one another in general characteristics such as age, race, lifestyle, and current place in the lifecycle. Ask these three people to tell you two things:

i. what do they think the average American values
ii. what are their own top 3 values

Use Table 1 to help you be sure you get all required information and to help you keep that information organized for analysis. Note you are NOT limited to the values we have discussed in class. I would strongly prefer that you not give your interviewees a list of values to review at this point. Please encourage your interviewees give you their own ideas. You may give them a few examples if necessary.

c. Transfer the information recorded about your interview characteristics and their answers to the questions “what does the Average American value; what do you value” to the Excel spreadsheet that you have downloaded from Canvas. Please put these results on the page with the tab “Interview Findings.” Note that you do not have to give a person’s name.

d. Ask your 3 interviewees (or 3 other individuals) to rank order Rokeach’s lists of instrumental and terminal values. Please record their responses on the Excel spreadsheet on the pages marked with the tabs “Interviewee Ranked Terminal Val” and “Interviewee Ranked Instr. Value”

2. please upload the results that you have recorded on the Excel spreadsheet to the Assignment folder for this assignment on Blackboard.

3. Submit a 2 to 3 page double-spaced analysis of your research findings on-line. In this analysis:
a. Describe the characteristics of your interviewees. Explain how they are similar and how they are different.
b. Compare what you expected to find with what you did find.
c. Compare what your interviewees said about the values of the “average American” with what they said about their own values.
d. Compare and contrast the responses of your interviewees as a group.
e. Compare your rankings on Rokeach’s value ranking test with that of two interviewees. For each of your comparisons, what similarities and differences did you find? What do you think contributed to these similarities and differences? Explain
f. Drawing from the results of your (admittedly limited) research, propose one or more specific value-based goals that you believe the average American is working to achieve.

Pick a presentation style that works for you and the points that you want to make. If several of your interviewees mention the same values, it may be easier to focus on values as your main theme and discuss similarity and difference of interviewees as related to the values. If your interviewees have quite different values, it might be easier to focus on describing your interviewees first and then discuss what they hold to be important and your assessment of why they hold those values rather than others for each interviewee. Or you might find a different approach works for you. Just be sure that however you chose to construct your analysis, you include points 4a through 4f.

This is a two part assignment. To complete this assignment, you will interview 3 people, using questions that I give you. In part 1, you will complete your interview and record what you learn.
