For your first assignment you will be critically reviewing an article we have selected for you from the geography journal “Progress in Human Geography”. The exercise aims to fulfill the following objectives:
1. Review an academic article using critical thought and analytical skill. While summary and description are important writing skills, they are distinct from analysis. Analysis breaks down an argument, examines its underlying assumptions and claims, and says something about what the argument is saying.
2. Practice written communication.
3. Develop an appreciation for the role and contribution of geography in
understanding health and illness within a broader societal context.
The article we would like you to review is:
Mayer, J.D. (1996) The political ecology of disease as a new focus for medical geography. Progress in Human Geography, 20:441-456.
Analyzing the article
A strong paper might include the following key areas (this is not a strict order):
1. A short paragraph providing an overview of the theoretical approach proposed.
2. A short paragraph including the basic conclusions about how Dr. Mayer
believes we should investigate health and disease.
