Please read the following reading.

Instructions:

DO NOT summarize the article, analyze the article and form your opinion.

Submit a 2-3 paragraph reaction for the reading. Your analysis should follow the following guidelines.

Look critically at the material being presented. This does not mean you need to criticize the reading or the author(s); it means you need to form your own opinion about it instead ofjust accepting what is said. First, identify what the reading is trying to do. Does it attempt to persuade, inform, teach, or something else? Who is the intended audience?

Below are some common kinds of prose along with possible ways to write a reaction for them, though the list is NOT exhaustive:

Position: Does the reading take a position (pro or con) on a particular issue or argument? If so, identify what the issue is, what the position is, and what justification or arguments are given for that position. Then, in your reaction, say whether you agree or disagree with the author(s) and why, and say whether you think anything was left out of the argument. If you cannot take a stand, explain why not.

Guidance: Does the reading provide guidelines or recommendations to manage or improve certain situation(s)? (Some pro and con readings do this too.) If so, identify the situation and the substance of the recommendations. Then, in your reaction, say whether you think the recommendations will be effective and why or why not.

Report: Is the reading an example of straight reporting (i.e., does it just describe a situation without appearing to take sides or make recommendations)? If so, say whether (and why) you find the presentation understandable, convincing, biased, incomplete, or something else.

An abbreviated stakeholder analysis – not just identifying the main affected parties but also considering what each party wants and why – may help you address the kinds of issues and questions mentioned above.

Besides answering the questions provided above, your reaction could include what you learned from the reading, whether you agreed or disagreed (with the facts stated, arguments made, or values presented), how the reading relates to your own experience (if it does). Try to relate the reading to the other material you read and the broad theme of the course. Feel free to say that the reading did not fit well or did not teach you anything, if that is your opinion. These are guidelines and suggestions; it is not expected that you answer every question for every reading. Two or three paragraphs of thoughtful reaction is enough. You should read carefully and think seriously, but you need not write a lot for each piece of reaction.
