This writing assignment is intended to evaluate how well you critically engage related literary works inside the scope of an assigned theme. The essay should not be a mere summary of the assigned material. Nor, should it recount biographical or historical information as a means of providing word count filler. Write insightfully toward an informed audience with the intent to provide a unique perspective that gathers intellectual attention.
Below is a list of possible topics. You may select one or write on a variation of one of the topics. Make sure that you stay within the boundaries of material and/or authors discussed in class. It is also a good idea to discuss any variations to an assigned topic with the instructor beforehand to avoid rewrites.
Your essay should present a clear position stated in its thesis statement. Remember you are putting forth an arguable stance or assessment, using evidence or illustrations from the work(s) to support your position. Do cite specific passages from the work. You have the option of quoting or paraphrasing. Here, you should refer to the Norton Field Guide or the MLA Handbook.
This essay should be 4-5 pages in length or 1000 words. It should be typed (double-spaced) with one-inch margins. It should possess an arguable thesis statement and multiple paragraphs. No title page is necessary. No research is required, but it may be necessary.
Possible Topics:
Discuss how Equiano, Jacobs, and Douglass’ slave narratives might have served as ammunition for the abolitionist movement. You may also want to consider what purpose they might serve for today’s readership.
Often artists take up the mantle of prophet, reading the signs of times and speculating on inevitable outcomes. Consider David Walker’s Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World and Turner’s Southampton rebellion, and Ida B. Wells’ Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases and the Civil Rights Movement of the fifties/sixties. Examine how these works stand as precursors to the events that follow them.
Discuss the early beginnings of the oral tradition. You may also want to address the following subtopics: a) the meaning of vernacular and its influence on the stories told; b) one or more of the genres: rap, spirituals, folktales, sermons, etc.; c) what purpose this form of storytelling serves in its place alongside the literary tradition; and d) the current significance of the oral tradition. The subtopics are just ideas. Make sure you craft an essay that does more than recount what is already in the textbook. In other words, what conclusions do you draw about the oral tradition?
The Bible is often used in the works of early writers to illustrate their religious convictions or support a given argument. Discuss biblical allusions or references in the autobiographies, essays, poetry, and/or fiction of early African American writers. Limit your focus to three writers. (Similarly, you could substitute “Constitution/Declaration of Independence” for “Bible”. Here, “religious” convictions become “political”.)
Examine the strategies for the improvement of “people of color” in America by Booker T. Washington, Maria W. Stewart, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Ida B. Wells. Compare and contrast their approaches and determine which would have been the most feasible during the time of their inception?
Double consciousness, a term used by Du Bois, defines the duality often experienced by American people of color. Discuss the influence of the phenomenon in three writers of varying genres.
