The instability of Black identity across the African diaspora as a result of the African slave trade is one of the major themes we’ve discussed during class thus far. Specifically, we have discussed how this destabilization of Black identity across the diaspora impacts women of African descent in particular. The gender ramifications of this instability manifest themselves in a multitude of ways in the literature we have read. For this paper, analyze how ONE of the literary texts assigned prior to February 23rd represents and deals with how the instability of Black diasporic identity impacts women of African descent. Provide historical and social context for your literary analysis of the text you choose. Use direct quotations and examples from the texts you discuss in making your points. No sources besides class texts will be necessary for this paper.
