The Research Paper (20 pts.):
– Ideally, the 4-5 sources will form the theoretical framework for your paper. Then you can apply your findings to a poem(s) from the Victorian age. The primary source you work with (the poem(s)) should not be one of those discussed in class; or at the very least, you should discuss them in a way we haven’t discussed, or focus on parts we did not mention.
– Your paper should be 1500-2000 words in length.
– The paper submission deadline is Thursday, December 10, 2015 (11:59 PM).
– Submit your paper via Blackboard (on the left navigation menu of the course, you will find a folder
called “Research Paper”. Once you click on it, you will find an item that has the same name. It includes the assignment details. Towards the end, you will see “View/Complete”. Clicking on it will direct you to another page where you can upload a document. Please upload your paper in “.doc/.docx” format). Please do not copy/paste your assignment into the comments box.
– Follow an academic formatting style. MLA is preferred. Click here for the MLA guide.
– You are highly encouraged to consult the writing center before submission.
– Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If any portion of a paper is plagiarized, no credit will be
awarded.
Recommended Paper structure:
– Literature Review: What do the sources you found say about the topic you are discussing? Summarize their views. Do not quote much. Quoted sentences/lines should not exceed 20% of the paper. It is better to paraphrase, since this will show you understand these sources. Group similar opinions together. This will form the introduction of your paper.
– Do not introduce the Victorian period, unless it is critical to prove your point. Your audience are already familiar with it.
– Research Gap: Here you will either agree with previous research but add new evidence (in the body of the paper), disagree with previous research and present your own opinion and evidence (in the body), or give a new idea that critics did not pay attention to before (and support it in the body). For example: “While critics have long debated the influence of Romanticism on Victorian poetry, (this idea) has received little attention.”
– Thesis statement: What’s the idea you want to communicate? What do you want to prove?
– The literature review, the research gap, and the thesis statement will form your introduction. You
can have as many paragraphs as needed in the introduction.
– Paper Body: The rest of the paper will serve as support to your opinion. You can rely on textual
evidence from poems of the Victorian age. Use quotations or instances that support your point of view. You can also apply logic, use secondary sources, compare/contrast, use studies from different disciplines. Here too you can have as many paragraphs as you need.
– Conclude your paper.
– Works Cited page
– Note that there are many ways to write a term paper; this is only a recommended structure. As you
read journal articles, analyze how they write their own papers. Helpful documents on writing a
